Author of Kuleana -- a story of family, land and legacy in Old Hawai'i

Sara Kehaulani Goo is an award-winning journalist, author and news leader based in Washington, D.C. Her debut memoir, Kuleana -- a story of family, land and legacy in Old Hawai'i was published this summer and explores her family’s struggle to hold onto their ancestral land given to them from King Kamehameha III (Flatiron Books, June 2025). Set in remote Maui, Sara shares how the story of how her family’s land loss (from 990 acres to today’s existing 10 acres) tells the lesser-known narrative of the Native Hawaiian people and the lasting impacts of colonialism through today in their land, history, language, hula and more. As part of her journey to tell this story, she comes to understand her own identity and embrace her own cultural practice while living in the diaspora.

Sara Kehaulani Goo has led some of the nation's largest news organizations from Washington, D.C. She currently serves as President of The Washington Post’s Creator Network and is the former editor-in-chief of Axios; managing editor of NPR and served in many roles as editor and reporter of The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. She is originally from Southern California.
