PLENARY – UNCONDITIONAL

Seven years in the making, a first of its kind film from award-winning filmmaker Richard Lui, on the topic affecting 100 million Americans – mental and emotional health. Watch three families bravely turn the corner, showing us the power of relearning how to love.  They are part of a third of Americans living through this every year, but we don’t see them. This film pulls off the bandaid on a topic that is both a hidden wound and a hidden strength in all of us.

Perspective from Washington: Challenges and Opportunities

In a year where we witnessed historical moments in health law and policy, including states’ legislative reactions to the end of the constitutional right to abortion care in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the outcomes of the presidential election in 2024 could directly impact the health equity of all Americans, as well as many other rights and opportunities. But despite the changes in law and makeup of Congress, longstanding challenges to health equity persist in AA & NH/PI communities, such as: language access, disaggregated and equitable data, and access to health coverage. Health policy experts on this panel will discuss these issues, as well as legislative and administrative victories over the past year and the challenges AA & NH/PI communities will likely face heading into the final year of the first term of the Biden-Harris Administration.

LUNCH PLENARY

Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant

Nineteen eighties Detroit was a volatile place to live, but above the fray stood a safe haven: Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine, where anyone—from the city’s first Black mayor to the local drag queens, from a big-time Hollywood star to elderly Jewish couples—could sit down for a warm, home-cooked meal. Here was where, beneath a bright-red awning and surrounded by his multigenerational family, filmmaker and activist Curtis Chin came of age; where he learned to embrace his identity as a gay ABC, or American-born Chinese; where he navigated the divided city’s spiraling misfortunes; and where—between helpings of almond boneless chicken, sweet-and-sour pork, and some of his own, less-savory culinary concoctions—he realized just how much he had to offer to the world, to his beloved family, and to himself.

Join us for a discussion with Curtis Chin, cofounder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and structured around the very menu that graced the tables of Chung’s. Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant is both a memoir and an invitation: to step inside one boy’s childhood oasis, scoot into a vinyl booth, and grow up with him—and perhaps even share something off the secret menu.

Engaging and Empowering AA & NHPI Communities and Health Leaders to Advance Awareness, Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Rare Kidney Disease – Inspiring Action and Collaboration

As many as one out of three people with IgA Nephropathy (IgAN), a rare and incurable autoimmune disease affecting the kidneys, are Asian American. Disease awareness among AA & NHPI communities is woefully lacking, and we know this population faces unique barriers to optimal health care, and health outcomes are generally poorer compared with other patient populations.

Facilitated by The Hon. Stephanie Murphy, learn more about IgAN from a dynamic panel of health care leaders and people living with the disease. The IgA Nephropathy Foundation will be launching an innovative Asian American initiative to help improve disease awareness and management of IgAN and reduce disparities. This innovative public health program may serve as a model for other rare disease efforts. Join this interactive session and become part of the solution by helping us better understand the unique opportunities and challenges to reach and engage Asian Americans.

Climate Change and AA and NH/PI Health

From wildfires, excessive heat, flooding, and poor air quality, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are experiencing climate change in extreme events more regularly. Ethnic and racial groups experience the stress and adverse mental health outcomes to these stressors differently. How can scientists, policy planners, and first responders better understand and help AA & NH/PIs deal with the adverse affects of climate change?
